After a string of rumors, leaks, and even early retail sales, Google has finally, officially revealed its latest Chromecast device. The company hosted an online product showcase today that focused on new hardware like the latest Pixel smartphone, but also set aside time for Google’s streaming device ambitions. The new Chromecast with Google TV got some time in the spotlight and Google says its new HDMI streaming dongle will retail for $49.99. And while it may resemble earlier models, the new Chromecast offers up some nifty new capabilities thanks to its spruced-up version of Android TV.

Past Chromecast devices relied on mobile apps or your computer browser to play media, but this new device includes a remote control and runs on a version of Android TV, offering the kind of app support and menu interface you’d expect from, say, a Roku, Fire TV, or Apple TV device. But while we’ve seen Android TV power devices from Nvidia, TiVo, and others, the version that comes loaded on Google’s new Chromecast sports a unique look, and a new name: Google TV.

As for specs, the device supports up to 4K HDR and 60 frames per second. That HDR support includes Dolby Vision, and it also gets HDMI pass-through for Dolby audio. The included remote, a first for the Chromecast line, offers up a dedicated Google Assistant button for voice control, along with dedicated media buttons for Google’s own YouTube as well as Netflix.

In all, Google says you’ll have access to over 6,500 apps, including big-name services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and more. You also get a few color choices: Snow, Sunrise, and Sky. The new Chromecast with Google TV is available today (well, officially, anyway) in the US. Preorders are also open for Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the UK, with a release scheduled for Oct. 15th. The company is also offering 6 months of Netflix plus the new Chromecast for $89.99, an offer that’s valid for both new and current Netflix users.
