Google Announces a Plan to Improve Google TV With Better Apps

Today Google announced a plan to improve Google TV and Android TV by building better apps to improve the customer experience. To do this, Google is releasing Compose TV for developers to help them build a better user interface for more beautiful apps with better functionality.

“Over the past year, we’ve continued to see significant growth on Android TV OS, now with over 150 million monthly active devices. In fact, according to Strategy Analytics, the Android TV streaming platform shipped on more devices worldwide than any other streaming TV platform in 2022.” Google said in a statement on their blog. “Today, we’re launching the Alpha release of Compose for TV, the latest UI framework for developing beautiful and functional apps for Android TV.”

Compose TV will help developers make apps using less code, a more intuitive user interface, and according to Google, a system that will accelerate development to bring apps to Google TV faster.

This all comes as, in April, Google TV announced a partnership with Tubi, Plex, and Haystack News to offer over 800 live channels for free built into Google TV. With this move, Google TV is becoming a major player in the work of free ad-supported live TV streaming.

You will find this new experience on the Chromecast with Google TV along with TVs that run Google TV from Sony, TCL, Hisense, and Philips. Android TV users will get this new update later this year on eligible devices.

There is no word on what Android TV devices will be eligible for this update.

Increasingly Android TV and Google TV is becoming a primary focus for Google. Now instead of seeming like a side project, Google’s efforts to take on Roku, Amazon, and Apple have become more aggressive recently.
