Google Adds The Word ‘Kodi’ To Their Piracy Filter

Latin woman looking disappointed at her laptopscreen, sitting behind her desk at the office.Kodi has increasingly come under target by content owners for allowing 3rd party add-ons that promote piracy. Before this week most of the efforts to stop piracy on Kodi have targeted 3rd party box sellers and 3rd party add-on makers.

Now, Google has taken a step directly targeting Kodi. This week Google added the word Kodi to their piracy filter blocking Kodi from autocomplete in Google. This means if you start to serach for something, Google will no longer suggest Kodi as one of the options.

Google has been blocking select auto-completes they see as piracy for some time now. Torrents, for example, has been banned for years from autocomplete. Now they seem to once again be expanding.

According to a statement from the Kodi Foundation, the nonprofit behind the Kodi software to TorrentFreak,  stated they were surprised by this move. “We are surprised and disappointed to discover Kodi has been removed from autocomplete, as Kodi is perfectly legal open source software.”

Over the last year content owners have made it clear that 3rd party add-ons on Kodi is now a major priority for them in their fight on piracy. The question now is, what is the next step and what will Kodi look like a year from now?
