Fubo Cancels Its Cheaper Essentials Plan, As It Focus on More Expensive Sports Focused Packages

Fubo, the sports-first live TV streaming service, has discontinued its recently introduced Essentials Plan, a budget-friendly package that excluded local regional sports networks also known as RSNs. Launched just four months ago in December 2024, the cheaper tier offered over 200 channels—mirroring the Pro plan’s lineup—but without RSNs, sparing subscribers the $12-$15 monthly RSN fee. The move, confirmed on March 23, 2025, aligns with Fubo’s renewed pledge to prioritize sports-heavy packages, a strategy it says reflects its core identity as a sports-focused streamer amid a dynamic TV landscape.

The Essentials Plan’s demise, first noted by Cord Cutter Weekly, ends an experiment that let users opt out of RSNs like FanDuel Sports Network or NBC Sports RSNs—channels carrying local MLB, NBA, and NHL games. A Fubo spokesperson confirmed the news to Cord Cutters News. New customers now face a choice between the Pro plan ($84.99/month plus RSN fees) or Elite plan ($94.99/month plus RSN fees), both include RSNs alongside ESPN, NFL Network, and more. Existing Essentials subscribers can keep their plan for now, but Fubo’s pivot signals a return to its sports-first roots.

This isn’t uncharted territory for Fubo. The service has a history of tweaking packages to sync with major sports seasons. During past Super Bowl windows, it famously nixed monthly billing for new users, nudging them toward quarterly commitments to lock in NFL viewership. Fubo has also tweaked some packages with the start of MLB and NFL seasons in the past. Now, with baseball’s spring training buzzing and the IPL cricket season kicking off March 22 on YouTube TV, Fubo’s shedding its RSN-free option to lean into its 35+ sports channels, including recent additions like Rangers Sports Network.

The decision comes amid a $5 price hike across all plans in January, pushing Pro to $84.99 and Elite to $94.99 before RSN fees.

It is unknown if Fubo will ever bring these packages back for new subscribers. Current subscribers can keep this plan as long as they do not make any changes to what packages they subscribe to.
