Frndly TV Adds a New Channel As Roku’s Live TV Streaming Service Continues to Grow

In a move that expands its family-oriented programming slate, Frndly TV, the affordable live TV streaming service now owned by Roku, has integrated the newly launched WEST channel into its offerings. The addition arrives on the same day WEST debuts as an over-the-air broadcast network, courtesy of Weigel Broadcasting Co., the parent company behind the popular MeTV. This partnership delivers a dedicated 24/7 stream of classic Western movies and television series to Frndly TV subscribers, tapping into the enduring nostalgia for frontier tales of justice, adventure, and moral dilemmas.

WEST, which stands for Western Entertainment Series Television, marks Weigel’s tenth national over-the-air network and represents a strategic response to rising viewer interest in vintage Western content. The channel features a comprehensive library exceeding 30 iconic titles, immersing audiences in the dusty trails and saloons of American television’s golden era. Programming includes timeless series such as Gunsmoke, with its gritty depictions of lawmen upholding order in lawless towns; Bonanza, chronicling the rugged lives of a Nevada ranching family; and Maverick, a clever blend of comedy and high-stakes card-table showdowns. Other staples like Rawhide, The Virginian, and Wild Wild West join the rotation, offering episodes that explore themes of heroism, betrayal, and redemption against sweeping landscapes of the Old West.

Frndly TV subscribers can now access WEST immediately through the service’s app on Roku devices, smart TVs, and mobile platforms. This seamless rollout aligns with Frndly TV’s mission to provide wholesome, accessible entertainment without the clutter of premium cable bundles. Since Roku’s acquisition of Frndly TV earlier this year for $185 million, the platform has emphasized integrating high-value, low-cost channels to attract cord-cutters seeking reliable live TV options. WEST fits perfectly into this vision, complementing existing Weigel networks already on Frndly TV, including MeTV, Start TV, Heroes & Icons, and the recently added MeTV Toons. These channels collectively cater to fans of retro programming, from sitcoms and cartoons to action-packed dramas, ensuring a diverse yet cohesive viewing experience.

The launch coincides with WEST’s over-the-air debut in 46 major U.S. markets, reaching approximately 55.7% of households. Viewers in key areas like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta, Tampa, Phoenix, Detroit, and Orlando can tune in via digital subchannels on local broadcast stations. Additional distribution includes TDS cable systems and DISH Network’s channel 372, broadening the channel’s footprint beyond streaming. Weeknight prime time on WEST prioritizes flagship series for steady engagement, while weekends host marathon blocks that allow fans to binge entire seasons uninterrupted. This scheduling approach underscores Weigel’s commitment to unedited, high-quality broadcasts that preserve the original spirit of these mid-20th-century productions.

Frndly TV’s inclusion of WEST enhances its appeal to demographics craving feel-good escapism amid modern entertainment overload. The service, starting at just $6.99 per month, already boasts over 50 channels focused on family-friendly fare, such as Hallmark Channel, Lifetime, A&E, and The History Channel. By adding WEST, Frndly TV not only diversifies its Western-themed content—previously scattered across MeTV’s afternoon slots—but also positions itself as a go-to hub for genre enthusiasts. The channel’s emphasis on classic Westerns revives interest in a format that dominated 1950s and 1960s airwaves, when shows like these drew millions by blending serialized storytelling with episodic moral lessons.

Weigel’s expansion into streaming reflects broader industry shifts toward hybrid models that blend free over-the-air access with paid digital delivery. The company’s portfolio, which includes niche networks like Catchy Comedy and Story Television, has long thrived on multicast technology, filling subchannels with targeted programming. WEST builds on this success by carving out a specialized niche, much like MeTV Toons did earlier this year with its cartoon focus. For Frndly TV, the addition strengthens ties with Weigel, a partner since 2022 when five of its networks first joined the lineup. This collaboration has proven fruitful, with MeTV alone becoming a cornerstone for classic TV lovers on the platform.
