Starting today, viewers in Philadelphia can watch PhillyBTV. New York City and San Diego are next up. Current markets include Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix. With the addition of these markets, LocalBTV will serve 17% of all US households.
The LocalBTV trial in these markets offer up to 42 channels of local broadcast TV. Viewers can stream on smartphones, PCs, and connected TVs with no cost. The company is testing the capability to offer over 100 channels in select markets. (Note: Didja is planning to release a premium version which will be a paid subscription.)
With LocalBTV, streamers can enjoy local programming with more channels, including local stations and independent channels that typically aren’t available with cable or on streaming services.
“This announcement is important for two reasons,” said Jim Long, CEO of Didja. “First, we’re excited to bring our local TV streaming service to viewers in the great city of Philadelphia. Second, we’re testing a new, even lower-cost national system architecture and our newest feature, targeted dynamic ad insertion. I’m very proud of our amazing small team and financial backers for this achievement.”
According to Didja, 23-25 million US homes use an antenna and another 13-15 million homes don’t have access to local broadcast channels. This company wants to provide a new option for non-cable homes to watch OTA TV and promote local media.
