Fox News Dominated MS Now and CNN in 2025

In a year marked by significant shifts in the cable news landscape, Fox News solidified its position as the dominant force in primetime and total day viewership for 2025, according to final Nielsen big data + panel measurements reported by AdWeek.

The network averaged 2.652 million total viewers during primetime (8-11 p.m. ET), marking an impressive 11 percent increase compared to 2024. This growth propelled Fox News to the top spot among all basic cable networks in total primetime viewers. In the key Adults 25-54 demographic, the network averaged 278,000 viewers, reflecting a modest 5 percent decline year-over-year. Despite the dip in the advertiser-coveted demo, Fox News secured third place overall in that category for primetime.

The performance extended across the full broadcast day (6 a.m. to 6 a.m. ET), where Fox News averaged 1.691 million total viewers—a robust 16 percent rise from the previous year—and 180,000 in the 25-54 demo (down 3 percent). This kept the network in first place for total day total viewers and second in the demo, underscoring consistent audience loyalty throughout programming hours.

Fox News’ stronghold stood in stark contrast to its main competitors. MS NOW (the rebranded MSNBC, which shifted names in November 2025 amid a corporate spinoff from NBCUniversal) saw substantial erosion. The network averaged 915,000 total viewers in primetime (down 15 percent from 2024) and 80,000 in the demo (a steep 40 percent drop). In total day, figures fell to 551,000 total viewers (down 30 percent) and 48,000 in the demo (down 43 percent). These declines resulted in MS NOW slipping to third in primetime total viewers across basic cable and dropping sharply in the demo rankings, from ninth to 19th. In total day, it moved from No. 3 to No. 2 in total viewers but fell from eighth to 13th in the demo.

CNN experienced similar challenges, averaging 573,000 total viewers in primetime (down 16 percent) and 102,000 in the demo (down 31 percent). Total day numbers stood at 432,000 total viewers (down 10 percent) and 70,000 in the demo (down 23 percent). The network ranked seventh in primetime total viewers and tenth in the demo (down from sixth), while holding fourth in total day total viewers but slipping to seventh in the demo.

Programming highlights further illustrated Fox News’ commanding lead. The network claimed 14 of the 15 most-watched cable news programs of the year, with shows like The Five topping the list at an average of 4.046 million viewers in its 5 p.m. ET slot. This dominance highlighted the appeal of its lineup in delivering consistent engagement.

Industry observers note that Nielsen implemented methodology changes last year, incorporating big data alongside panel measurements, which may influence direct year-over-year comparisons. Nonetheless, the 2025 figures reflect Fox News’ ability to grow its total audience amid a non-election year, while rivals faced steeper audience losses. The network’s sustained leadership reinforces its role as the go-to destination for cable news consumers seeking coverage and commentary.

As the media environment continues to evolve—with streaming and digital platforms drawing viewers—Fox News’ gains demonstrate resilience and viewer preference in a fragmented landscape. The network’s performance not only outpaced direct competitors but also positioned it strongly among broader cable offerings, maintaining its status as a top performer in television news.
