Fox News finished May 2026 as the undisputed leader of cable news, drawing more total viewers in primetime than MS NOW and CNN put together, according to a new industry report published by Ad Week using Nielsen big data and panel methodology. The numbers paint a picture of a network that, despite notable month-over-month declines, still commands an audience so large that its two primary competitors cannot match it even when their viewership is combined.

  • 2.38M Primetime Viewers Fox News
  • 942K Primetime Viewers MS NOW
  • 633K Primetime Viewers CNN
  • 1.575M MS NOW + CNN Combined Rivals Total

In May, Fox News attracted 2.381 million total viewers during primetime, while MS NOW and CNN drew 942,000 and 633,000 respectively. That means Fox News surpassed its two closest competitors by more than 800,000 viewers — a gap wider than the entire audience of either rival network on its own. During total day, Fox News extended that lead further, pulling in 1.528 million viewers compared to 594,000 for MS NOW and 460,000 for CNN.

Fox News outpaced its two nearest rivals by more than 800,000 primetime viewers — a margin larger than either competitor’s total audience.

Fox News Performance

The May figures represent a significant pullback from Fox News’ April performance. The network shed 17 percent of its primetime audience in total viewers and dropped 35 percent among adults aged 25 to 54 compared to the prior month. During total day, declines of 19 percent in total viewers and 28 percent in the demo were recorded. Despite those month-over-month losses, the network’s sheer volume of viewership kept it firmly planted atop the cable news rankings.

When measured against May 2025, Fox News showed a modest 3-percent decline in total primetime viewers and a 2-percent dip in total day. The steeper losses came in the advertiser-coveted adults 25-54 demographic, where the network fell 20 percent in primetime and 21 percent during total day compared to a year ago. Notably, Fox News was the only network among those tracked to post year-over-year declines in the demo — a data point that underscores the shifting composition of its audience even as its raw viewership numbers continue to dwarf the competition.

In the rankings, Fox News held first place among total viewers in both primetime and total day. It also moved up one position, from fourth to third, in the adults 25-54 demo during primetime.

MS NOW Performance

MS NOW claimed the second-place spot in total viewers for both dayparts, but the gap separating it from Fox News remains extraordinary. With 942,000 primetime viewers, MS NOW drew roughly 40 percent of what Fox News managed — a ratio that illustrates just how concentrated viewership is at the top of the cable news landscape.

The network did not escape the month-over-month erosion that affected the broader category. MS NOW lost a quarter of its total primetime audience compared to April and saw demo viewership fall 28 percent. Total day figures followed a similar trajectory, with declines of 22 percent in total viewers and 24 percent in the adults 25-54 demo.

The longer view offers a brighter picture for MS NOW. Against May 2025, the network posted gains of 7 percent in total primetime viewers and 27 percent in the demo — a year-over-year improvement that outpaced every other network measured. During total day, it was up 9 percent in total viewers and 24 percent in the demo. Still, the network slipped from second to third in total day rankings, finishing 14th in the primetime demo and 11th in total day among the demo.

CNN Performance

CNN reported the sharpest month-over-month declines of any network in the report, shedding 30 percent of its total primetime audience compared to April and losing 37 percent of its demo viewership during that same daypart. Total day figures were similarly bruising, with drops of 28 percent in total viewers and 35 percent in the demo.

Despite those recent headwinds, CNN’s year-over-year trajectory tells a markedly different story. Compared to May 2025, the network surged 49 percent in total primetime viewers and grew 45 percent in the demo — the strongest annual gains in the report. During total day, CNN added 30 percent in total viewers and 20 percent in the demo versus the same month last year.

In the overall rankings, CNN fell one spot to sixth place in total primetime viewers and held fourth during total day. The network finished 11th in the primetime demo and sixth in the total day demo.

The Bigger Picture

Together, the May 2026 numbers reinforce a cable news landscape that remains deeply asymmetric. Fox News’ combined primetime and total day audiences are not merely larger than its rivals — they are, in both cases, larger than those rivals combined. While month-over-month swings affect every network in the ratings report, the structural gap at the top of the cable news hierarchy shows little sign of narrowing. For advertisers, programmers, and media strategists alike, the sheer scale of that lead remains one of the defining realities of the modern cable news business.
