Formula 1 Plans to Launch a Live Streaming Service in 2018

As sports increasingly move online with a growing list of streaming services for the hard-core fan, racing has been one of the few holdouts.

Now Formula 1 plans to launch an online live streaming service in 2018 as part of an overhaul of their digital and broadcast strategies.

While official plans have not been announced, the Chief of Formula 1 Sean Bratches told Autosports.com: “We have an obligation to our fans, quite candidly, to ensure that they are able to access our content in any means they want,” he said. “We would be derelict if we pursued a path for anything other than that.”

It has been rumored that Formula 1 was in talks with Amazon for a streaming deal similar to Thursday Night NFL football, but now it is being reported that they will launch this service in-house.

“Our objective is to create platforms in the direct-to-consumer arena that engage fans and leverage our assets—whether they are live races, archival [or] are data,” Bratches said.

Sports is slowly moving to online streaming options. Whether supplemental to traditional TV or a full replacement of traditional pay TV, online streaming is becoming the answer to most sports viewing woes. Now it looks like Formula 1 will join that list of sports moving online.
