Former HBO Exec Signs a Five Year Deal with Apple TV+

Apple TV + LogoLast year, Richard Plepler left his job as HBO’s chief executive, after spending 27 years working for the company. Now, he’s signed on with Apple in a five year deal to create content for Apple TV+.

Plepler recently launched a new company, Eden Productions which will bring exclusive TV series, documentaries and films to the platform.

“It was instantaneously clear to me that I had a wonderful and very privileged run at HBO and I wasn’t going to be able to duplicate that again,” Plepler said in his first interview since leaving HBO, according to the New York Times. “And I didn’t want to try to duplicate that again. It felt very clear to me that I just wanted to do my own thing.”

During his time at HBO, the network developed award winning series including Game of Thrones and Big Little Lies. Interestingly, stars from both of those series are now starring in series for Apple TV+, Jason Momoa in See and Reese Witherspoon in The Morning Show.

Apple is bringing Plepler in to be the driving force behind the next wave of original content. While the company invested heavily in bringing in big name talent for the first round of content, reviews were mixed. Richard Plepler seems confident that he’s bringing his talents to the right place.

“I thought that Apple was the right idea very quickly, just because it was embryonic enough that I thought maybe, you know, I could make a little contribution there,” he said.

When asked by NYT about his departure from HBO, Plepler declined to comment. Instead, he says, he’s moving forward with a career in production and no interest in running another company.
