FCC’s Broadband Pledge Adds More Companies as Total Passes 500

Federal Trade Commission LogoThe Federal Communications Commission announced another milestone today, as nearly 200 more broadband providers and telcos have signed on to the FCC’s Keep Americans Connected Pledge. This newest group, which includes local and regional carriers, pushes the total number of companies that have signed on past 500 since the pledge was announced earlier this month.

“I’m pleased to see that more and more providers are signing on to show their commitment to their customers,” FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a press release, “And many of these companies have gone even further, offering things like free service for low-income Americans and students, the easing of data caps, and increasing broadband speeds at no cost.”

The pledge requires companies to commit to maintaining service to residents and small businesses for the next 60 days, regardless of potential missed payments due to the coronavirus outbreak. Companies must also waive late fees brought on because of financial issues related to the pandemic. Lastly, those that sign on must agree to open their WiFi hotspots for use by the public.

In addition to the main requirements, Pai also lauded several companies who offered additional services, deals, and offers. AT&T, for one, offered two months of free service for new members of its low-income internet program. Meanwhile, T-Mobile and Verizon, also offered lower-cost options.
