The idea was that the United States government would build, or partner with other companies to build, a 5G wireless home internet service. The reports said staff on the Trump administration have been pushing the idea as a way to secure our infrastructure from hacking attempts.
Now it looks like the FCC and others have come out against the plan according to Reuters.
“Any federal effort to construct a nationalized 5G network would be a costly and counterproductive distraction from the policies we need to help the United States win the 5G future,” Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai, a Republican appointed by Trump, said in a statement on Monday.
The issue seems to be that a government-owned and -managed 5G network paid for with tax dollars would limit competition.
Opponents say public companies would not be able to compete against a tax payer-funded 5G network and it would quash competition.
It sounds like the news of a 5G home internet service built by the government may not be all that some hoped it would. The government and FCC have been making efforts to speed up 5G and fiber roll out to bring high speed internet to more Americans.
