This week the FCC said it would not redefine broadband. This means that internet providers must offer 25 Mbps down if they want it to be considered broadband.
“This is especially tragic when according to the Senate Joint Economic Committee, there are twelve million kids that are caught in the Homework Gap because they lack Internet service at home,” Democratic commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel said in a statement. “We should be reaching for faster speeds and universal access. Anything less than that, shortchanges our children and our future.”
2018 is slowly turning into the year of rural intent with four bills currently before the US House of Representatives all focusing on speeding up rural broadband and the FCC pushing new rules to speed up the roll out.
The issue has always been the high cost to wire rural America where you may have to run miles of cables to connect a handful of homes. Now with wireless internet services coming online many are hoping that we will soon see the long dreamed about jump in rural American broadband.
