Fandango Buys Its Online Rival MovieTickets.com

Do you like to buy your movie tickets online before you go to the theater? Now you may have one less option because Fandango has announced a deal to acquire rival MovieTickets.com.

The deal seems to not only be an effort to grow in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom but also about Fandango’s desire to grow in Latin America where MovieTickets.com has a big presence.

“MovieTickets.com has done a terrific job, building a popular and trusted brand with millions of loyal customers and hundreds of exhibitors, and has been a champion of serving theater circuits large and small for nearly two decades,” said Fandango President Paul Yanover, in a statement. “We look forward to sharing an array of mobile and social media innovations with their customer base to enhance the movie discovery, planning and ticket buying experience.”

Fandango has recently been trying to grow by acquisition. Late last year Fandango purchased the movie streaming service M-GO from DreamWorks Animation. Newly named FandangoNOW, it supplements its ticket service by allowing customers to rent and buy movies and shows.

Fandango has also recently purchased Brazil’s Ingresso.com and Peru’s Cinepapaya in an effort to expand.

According to reports the deal to buy MovieTickets.com should close in the fourth quarter 2017.
