Bloomberg is reporting that Facebook’s Oculus is currently working on an updated version of its all-in-one, standalone Quest virtual reality headset. In fact, several replacement candidates are reportedly being considered, though the ongoing coronavirus pandemic may delay shipping into 2021.

Unlike many other current VR systems, like Oculus’ own Rift S and Sony’s PlayStation VR, the Quest doesn’t need to be tethered to a console or computer to function. And while details on specs for the new version are scarce at the moment,  it’s likely safe to assume the next Quest will boast displays with a faster refresh rate to enable a smoother, less flicker-prone experience. Other potential changes include a more comfortable fit and possibly a lighter overall weight. And with eye fatigue and headset comfort remaining key concerns for VR headsets in general, improvements in those areas would be welcome.

And while gaming remains a focus for most mainstream VR headsets, the Quest does offer support for a number of popular streaming services, including Netflix, YouTube, PlutoTV, ESPN, Prime Video and more. We’ll keep an eye on Facebook for any official announcements regarding potential Quest successors and keep you up to date.
