Facebook Plans to Spend Billions on Sports Streaming Rights

Three happy young men watching football game and keeping arms raised while sitting on sofaSports streaming is becoming one of the hottest markets in the world of cord cutting. Amazon, Twitter, Stadium, Facebook, and other companies are all fighting it out for sports streaming rights.

Now Facebook is stepping up their efforts to get streaming rights to sporting events. According to Sports Business Journal Facebook has set aside a “few billion dollars” to buy rights for global sports streaming.

Recently Facebook has had several major streaming deals. First with Major League Baseball to live stream a weekly game during the 2017 season. They have also partnered with Stadium to stream a slate of college basketball games through the 2017–2018 season.

Facebook recently bid $600 million for five years of streaming rights to the Indian Premier League games, but lost out to 21st Century Fox-owned Star India, who paid $2.5 billion for broadcast and streaming rights.

The question now is how much will Twitter and Amazon spend to get sports streaming rights. Both services have made it clear that they want the same rights Facebook has and it could create a spending war for sports.
