One thing that was missed in the focus on the sale of Kodi devices was the fact that now even promoting the use of Kodi is now banned on Facebook. According to the new Facebook rules under Prohibited Content Facebook says, “Promoting the sale or use of streaming devices with KODI installed.”
What is interesting is “promoting the use of streaming devices with Kodi.” This raises questions about the large number of pages and groups that promote Kodi and devices using Kodi. There is even an official Kodi Facebook page with over 435,000 likes that often talks about using Kodi on devices like the Xbox One.
It is one thing to ban the sale of an item, but now Facebook is banning the promotion of Kodi. The question now is how strictly Facebook plans to enforce this. Facebook is unlikely to start banning anyone who mentions Kodi as an option. What is more likely here are groups and Facebook pages that promote Kodi on streaming devices now face a possible ban.
In recent years there has been a crackdown on the sale of fully loaded Kodi devices that promise everything for free if you buy a device. Content owners have also started to sue creators of third-party add-ons for Kodi that promote piracy. Now it seems Facebook wants to stay clear of any possible lawsuits focused at them.
The question now is how aggressively will Facebook enforce this new rule. Will they just wait for content owners to complain before reacting? Or will Facebook start aggressively removing Facebook groups and pages that promote Kodi?
