Facebook recently updated its Commerce Policy to include a ban on “products or items” that facilitate or encourage unauthorized access to digital media. The new rule has almost certainly been put in place to stop the further spread of “fully loaded” set-top devices running modified Kodi and similar software. The Commerce Policy goes on to say Sale of the following is prohibited on Facebook: Products or items that facilitate or encourage unauthorized access to digital media.
Well you will likely find the so called “Kodi Boxes” sill for sale in many Facebook groups sellers will now face having their accounts banned.
Other services like eBay have announced that they will work with law enforcement to help track down the sellers of these devices. We work with the police and regulators to ensure that all listings on eBay comply with the law. There are blocks in place to prevent the listing of illegal items, but we also constantly monitor our marketplace. Anyone found to be knowingly selling items that dont comply with the law will be investigated and could face account restrictions or suspension.
These moves to block sales of “Kodi Boxes” following a wave of legal action against these type of sellers in the UK and Canada. Facebook also seems to want to try to distance itself from dubious media devices by threatening sellers with severe action. There has even been rumors that a crackdown will soon start in the US.
A number of retailers have recently found themselves on the facing legal actions for selling these boxes. Most recently, a Hartlepool man was found guilty of advertising and selling pre-configured TV boxes to pubs for up to £1,000 per device. He was later fined £250,000 and others have been been threatened with jail time.
