We know the service will start at $35 a month and be an “all-in” service with 100 channels. We do know there will be packages, and we have no idea what the $35 plan will include.
“This deal was about one thing: how can we change the ecosystem?” said Stephenson, adding that it wasn’t about preserving the status quo. “I don’t think you can characterize it as defensive.”
“We’ve done video on-demand at HBO,” said Jeffrey L. Bewkes CEO of Time Warner. “We knew people wanted it for every channel […] You should be able to get any network you want on demand.” He goes on to say that every TV channel should be as on-demand as HBO Now. Indeed AT&T even wants Time Warner to break up channel bundles into à la carte offerings, which is relatively unheard of with most cable companies.
Channels
We do not know what channels will be included, but we do know Time Warner- and Disney-owned channels such as ESPN will be there along with NBCUniversal and some local NBC channels. No word on any other local channels.
Supported Devices
Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Stick, and Chromecast will be supported. More streaming options are expected to be available in the future. We expect Roku to be added after the new Roku OS comes out later this year.
Packages
From an internal email that was leaked yesterday. “DIRECTV NOW offers programming packages that are similar to those of traditional DIRECTV service. No annual contract is required. Add-on packages like HBO are also available.”
Release date
According to a leaked email November 4, 2016, will be the release date for DirecTV NOW. These dates have a way of changing and the official statement is by the end of November.
For now that is everything we know. Hopefully more details will come out before the rumored November 4 release date.
