Wi-Fi is poised to get even faster this year.
The Wi-Fi Alliance has started the certification process for Wi-Fi 7, the next generation of wireless connectivity, according to Telecoms.
More than 233 million devices — like smartphones, PCs, tablets, and access points — with Wi-Fi Certified 7 are expected to hit the market this year. By 2028, that number of Wi-Fi 7 devices for sale is set to reach 2.1 billion. (Read more about Wi-Fi 7’s advances here.)
“Wi-Fi Certified 7 supports superior connectivity for emerging use cases with high levels of interactivity and immersion,” according to The Wi-Fi Alliance.
This comes at a time when high-speed reliable connectivity is in high demand — and in many cases necessary — as more services go online and more of our daily lives require an internet connection.
“Wi-Fi Certified 7 networks support advanced Wi-Fi performance for high bandwidth applications to ensure each connected device delivers the dependable experience users expect, even in dense environments like stadiums and large campuses,” The Wi-Fi Alliance said on its website.
In addition, Wi-Fi 7 is expected to address increased user demand for low-latency tech like augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality, cloud computing, and more.
Wi-Fi 7 — which will work in the 2.4 and 5 GHz band — includes benefits like higher throughput — or task performance over a period of time, improved deterministic latency support, enhanced efficiency and reliability, 20% higher transmission rates than Wi-Fi 6, reduced power consumption, and enhanced spectral efficiency, according to The Wi-Fi Alliance.
