ESPN’s New Streaming Service Will Let You Subscribe to Out-of-Market Games

This week Disney’s CEO Bob Iger opened up at the Media & Telecom Conference about Disney’s plans for streaming and their new ESPN Plus streaming service.

During the talk we learned a lot about Disney’s plans for the future of streaming. Some we already knew like more original shows and movies to attract subscribers to their new streaming service; however, we also received new details about Disney’s future plans.

Iger reconfirmed that the ESPN Plus streaming service will be $4.99 a month at launch, but he hinted that as top-tier sports are added to the service new pricing tiers may be added.

Most interestingly he said that the ESPN Plus app will allow subscribers to add team, season, or even passes to their favorite Major League Baseball and National Hockey League out-of-market packages.

Will this be limited to teams ESPN owns rights to from their deal to buy Fox Regional Sports Networks or will this be an opportunity to buy the MLB.TV service through the ESPN Plus app allowing you to manage the billing in a single place? Iger did not answer that question, so for now we will have to wait and see what Disney does next.

Iger went on to say that the new ESPN Plus app will continue to develop and that the app will remain a long-term priority for the company. “Over time, our intention would be for that app to be the app that people experience ESPN on,” he said, “but we’re going to manage the migration of that very carefully because right now we have a business — the multi-channel business — that is serving our company quite well.”

ESPN Plus will not include the national feeds of ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, etc. For that you will still need a live TV streaming service like Hulu, DIRECTV NOW, or Sling TV.
