ESPN Adds Sports-Themed Disney Movies to its Prime-Time Friday Lineup

ESPN-logoWe’ve reported on the challenges ESPN has been facing during the coronavirus pandemic, with live sports grinding to a halt as a result. And with Major League Baseball’s Opening Week upon us, and no live baseball games to cover, the sports network is opting to air sports-themed movies produced by parent company Disney.

The broadcasts start tonight, Friday, March 27th at 8pm ET, with, appropriately enough, baseball movie The Rookie, starring Dennis Quaid. The movie focuses on high school coach Jim Morris and his chance at becoming the oldest rookie in the major leagues.

The following Friday, April 3rd, ESPN turns its attention to basketball with Glory Road, featuring Josh Lucas. That broadcast is set for 8:30pm ET.

We’ve listed out the announced films below, but the company has yet to disclose official dates and times for the rest of its lineup.

The movie nights mark the latest move by ESPN to fill a sizeable content gap in its programming. We’ve reported in the recent weeks that the company has looked into live sports alternatives like rebroadcasting classic games. In fact, the network aired a full seven-hour tribute to former New England Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady.

You can watch ESPN live on Sling TV, Hulu, AT&T TV NOW, YouTube TV, and Vidgo.
