Elmo Will Host a Special Virtual Playdate Episode

ElmoElmo is hosting a virtual playdate to help comfort kids during the coronavirus pandemic. This half-hour episode will air on HBO, HBO Latino, TBS, TNT, truTV, Cartoon Network and Boomerang on Tuesday, April 14 at 7 PM ET. You can also watch it for free at the same time on PBS Kids.

During the ‘Playdate,’ Elmo will visit with some well-known friends via video conferencing. Lin-Manuel Miranda joins in singing along to “Old McDonald Had a Farm,” while Anne Hathaway pops in for a round of “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes,” and Tracee Ellis Ross plays “Elmo Says” with the furry red muppet. During the episode, they’ll also celebrate doctors and healthcare workers who are helping families during this time.

The show is part of Sesame Street‘s “Caring for Each Other” project that launched in response to COVID-19. The parent and children-oriented site is “filled with content you can use all day long to spark playful learning, offer children comfort, and focus a bit on yourself, too.”

Sesame Street and its characters are well-known for providing timely and relatable content for children to help them understand world events and grown-up situations on a kid-friendly level.

“We hope Sesame Street: Elmo’s Playdate will entertain and inspire families at a moment when so many are feeling isolated and overwhelmed by current events,” says Steve Youngwood, Sesame Workshop’s President, Media & Education and Chief Operating Officer. “With help from our distribution partners around the world, this special will encourage parents and kids to gather and relax as a family — in a way that only the Sesame Street Muppets can.”

After it’s TV airing, Elmo’s Playdate will be available on HBO Now, HBO Go and HBO On Demand. It will also be on HBO Max at launch.
