One of the best features of using a Roku is the ability to use your phone as a remote to control for your TV and, even better, as a keyboard for your TV to enter usernames and passwords.
Recently, we have been seeing reports that Roku has started charging $6.99 a week to use these features. So, is it true?
The good news is the official Roku app is 100% free to use, including the built-in app.
So, what is happening? It seems a third-party app maker has released an app that is confusing some into thinking it is the official app but with a $6.99 a week cost.
An example of this app can be found on Reddit with a Roku owner wondering when this new fee started.
As always be very careful to only use official apps for any service. Carefully look at who the publisher is and be careful of using third-party apps that you are unsure about the source of.
When in doubt, never use an app you do not trust, as you do not know what it will do with your data.
This is one example of services charging for what Roku itself offers for free. For years sites have offered to set up your Roku for a fee that sometimes is a yearly recurring cost. Don’t get scammed.
