Disney’s ‘The Mandalorian’ Scored 15 Emmy Nominations, to the Surprise of Disney

With the launch of Disney+ last year came arguably the platform’s most popular original series, The Mandalorian, a drama based on extending storylines from the Star Wars franchise. Now the series has multiple nominations for an Emmy Award, something Disney Plus content and marketing president Ricky Strauss said was never the intention.

“I always found that when you’re working on creative storytelling, especially in filmed entertainment, if you have awards in your line of scope, then that’s never a good start,” Strauss said in an interview with Variety.

Disney+ racked up 19 Emmy nominations overall this year, with The Mandalorian pulling in 15 of them, more than any other Disney show this year, including a nomination in the drama series category.

As a streamer, getting this many Emmy nominations in the first year of launching is a record-breaking win for Disney+. Netflix got a nomination for its drama series House of Cards in 2013, but the streaming service had been around for more than a decade, although originals were new that year.

Another obstacle The Mandalorian seemed to skirt when it comes to Emmy nominations is the fact it’s a Sci-Fi series, something that usually gets overlooked. But Star Wars is enough of a household name that it defies science fiction stereotypes and crosses the lines into other genres, appealing to a vastly wider audience.
