Disney’s ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reboot is Canceled

Disney’s reboot of Lizzie McGuire is officially dead. Despite the series generating a lot of buzz and excitement, Lizzie herself took to Instagram to confirm that “despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen.”

Hilary Duff posted this message to fans:

This news comes after the reboot had already faced several hurdles in the making. It was originally scheduled to launch on DIsney+ in 2020, but COVID-19 created a setback in production. There were also some creative differences that ultimately led to the show’s creator, Terri Minsky, stepping away from her role.

“Fans have a sentimental attachment to ‘Lizzie McGuire’ and high expectations for a new series. After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show,” Disney said in a statement.

The differences stemmed from turning the reboot into less of a kids show and injecting more adult content, since the storyline was set to follow Lizzie as she entered her 30s, navigating relationships and career moves along the way. It was reported that the show would be moving to a new platform other than Disney+, with Hulu as a possible option.

But apparently, a reboot just wasn’t what dreams were made of and the show is now officially dead.
