Yesterday Disneys Chairman and CEO Roger Iger opened up about their future plans for Disney and streaming.
“At some point, we felt it would be necessary for us to not only be disrupted, but to disrupt our business ourselves,” Iger said. “We felt that we were no longer seeing a speed bump of disruption … What we were seeing instead was real, profound and permanent change.”
Part of that plan to become a disrupter is a plan to launch an ESPN standalone service with 10,000 extra live sporting events starting in 2018. Yet it sounds like Disney does not plan to stop there. “Eventually, that app may possibly become the only way you watch ESPN,” Iger said.
Well, we are likely far from a day where the only way to get ESPN is a la carte option it seems like the idea is at least a possibility.
Back in August Disney announced that in 2019 they would pull off of their Walt Disney Studios and Pixar movies from Netflix and launch their own streaming service. We still have few details but reports are Disney is planning a sub $5 a month service to give unprecedented access to Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars movies.
Disney also announced that they will make original films for the new streaming service that won’t be released in theaters.
For now, we will have to wait for more details in the future but it is starting to look like Disney is taking small steps in the direction of a la carte TV.
