Searchlight Pictures has announced that its upcoming film “Nomadland” starring Frances McDormand, will premiere in theaters and on Hulu on February 19. Searchlight Pictures and Hulu are both owned by Disney.

“Nomadland” first premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 11 where it won the award for Best film and is in the running for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Disney shared during its Investor Day event that it would be doing a mix of theatrical releases and straight to streaming for its 2021 slate of movies. Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel titles set to debut on Disney+ were the focus of the event. However, Disney has opted to put titles geared toward adults rather than families on Hulu, including “Nomadland.”

Read the synopsis for the film and check out the trailer, below.

Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.
