Disney+ Updates Its Disclaimers on Potentially Problematic Content

Disney+ is adding to its disclaimers shown before some movies that could be seen as culturally insensitive. Titles with the new warning include  Peter Pan, Dumbo, Aristocats, and Lady and the Tramp.

When Disney+ launched in November 2019, it included disclaimers on content for everything from cultural insensitivity to smoking to “mischievous behavior.” For example, a note on the description of The Jungle Book said “This program is presented as originally created. It may contain outdated cultural depictions.”

Disney is now updating some disclaimers on content by showing a warning on screen when a user clicks on a film. The message stays on screen for 10 seconds before the content begins playing.

The disclaimer says “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”
