Mentions of a “groupwatch” feature on the Disney+ may point to a future watch party feature for Disney’s streaming service. Gizmodo reported on the find earlier today and while Disney hasn’t made any official announcements about such a feature, it would make sense given similar options on rival services.
The term “groupwatch” appears in multiple places in the source code of the Disney+ site and we’ve seen it pop up in the page source for the Beauty and the Beast landing page, among others.
If a new group watch feature is indeed coming soon, the timing seems logical. Disney is about to launch the live-action remake of Mulan on the service, instead of its original plans for a wide-scale theater premiere. A watch party feature, where friends and family in different locations can stream the same show or movie at the same time and interact with each other, could capture at least some of the shared experience that comes along with watching movies together in a theater.
Of course, with no official word from Disney just yet, tying the group watch feature to any specific release is purely speculation. And it’s worth pointing out streaming services are regularly testing out new features and options, some of which never actually come to pass.
