Disney+ Reaches Settlement with Scarlett Johansson in ‘Black Widow’ Lawsuit

Disney+ has reached a settlement with Scarlett Johansson regarding her ‘Black Widow’ premiere on Premier Access. Details of the settlement have not been disclosed, but both parties seem happy with the outcome according to their statements.

“I am happy to have resolved our differences with Disney,” Johansson said in a statement on Thursday. “I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done together over the years and have greatly enjoyed my creative relationship with the team. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in years to come.”

“I’m very pleased that we have been able to come to a mutual agreement with Scarlett Johansson regarding ‘Black Widow,’” said chairman of Disney Studios Content Alan Bergman in a statement. “We appreciate her contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and look forward to working together on a number of upcoming projects, including Disney’s ‘Tower of Terror.’”

The ‘Black Widow’ star claims that her contract guaranteed that the Marvel movie would be released exclusively in theaters, but Disney opted to premiere the film on Disney+ at the same time as the theatrical release. In the lawsuit, Johansson says that her salary was impacted by the move (allegedly by tens of millions of dollars), as her pay was dependent on how the film performed at the box office. The film brought in $158 million at the box office globally, and $60 million from Disney+ Premier Access.

Johansson originally sought a $50 million payout from Disney+ in the lawsuit.
