Disney+ Reaches 100 Million Global Subscribers

Disney+ now has over 100 million global subscribers, the company announced Tuesday during its Annual Meeting of Shareholders. That number is up from 94.9 million subscribers since the end of 2020, as reported during Disney’s recent quarterly earnings call.

Since the most recent earnings report, Disney launched Star, an entertainment brand for viewers outside of the US. Star content was made available for Disney+ subscribers in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and Singapore in February. The brand, featuring entertainment for both kids and adults, helped to bring in a new set of subscribers in international markets.

“The enormous success of Disney+ —which has now surpassed 100 million subscribers—has inspired us to be even more ambitious, and to significantly increase our investment in the development of high-quality content,” Mr. Chapek said. “In fact, we set a target of 100+ new titles per year, and this includes Disney Animation, Disney Live Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. Our direct-to-consumer business is the Company’s top priority, and our robust pipeline of content will continue to fuel its growth.”

Disney+ launched in the US on November 12, 2019 and quickly built a large subscriber base. The streaming service has since rolled out in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Latin America, and Singapore.
