In a recent interview with ACE Universe, Star Wars star Ewan McGregor confirmed the Obi-Wan Kenobi series will be using the same innovative technology pioneered by The Mandalorian. The new “stagecraft” tech is the next big thing in movie production since the invention of the green screen and utilizes LED-lit backgrounds on high-resolution screens to create virtual sets.
The technology is so good, it even looks real on set in the studio according to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. A Walt Disney Company executive visited her and producer Jon Favreau on the set of The Mandalorian and didn’t even notice it was virtual.
“…It’s one of those things that is difficult to explain until you walk into the environment to see how it’s working,” Kennedy said. “And he stepped in, and he looked around, and he said, Jon, I thought you weren’t going to build anything. And he had no idea he was standing in a virtual set. That’s how unbelievable it is.”
Being the next highly anticipated Star Wars series since The Mandalorian, it’s a no-brainer that the Obi-Wan TV series will utilize the same technology that was such a success. This will be a huge change from the technology used the last time McGregor played his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2005 with Revenge of the Sith.
“I think I am going to enjoy it much more…(the prequels) were all blue screen and green screen and it was hard to imagine, but nowadays I think things have moved on so much, and I think a lot of what you see is gonna be what we see on the set,” McGregor said. “I don’t know if you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes of The Mandalorian series, but they employ that incredible screen…it’s pretty amazing. It makes you feel like you’re in the place, it’s going to feel realer for us as actors. And I think we’ll be using some of that technology on our show.”
There’s no release date yet for when the series will hit Disney+, and a title has yet to be announced.
