Disney is Looking at Buying Netflix

Netflix FamilyThere have been many rumors over the years that Netflix was up for sale. Netflix once approached Blockbuster long before they became a huge company. (The former Blockbuster CEOs are probably kicking themselves for not buying Netflix.)

Now there is growing evidence that Disney is in serious talks to buy Netflix according to the New Yorker and Recode.

Recently Recode had an opportunity to talk with Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, who said, he “Can’t comment.” Typically, that is a sign that a deal is still in the works but nothing has been finalized.

We can confirm that Disney is looking at their options with an eye to buying some company. It has also been reported that Disney is in talks to buy Twitter. Disney interest in Twitter is probably for the rights to the new streaming service Twitter is building with the likes of the NFL, NBA, Pac-12, and many other events and sports groups.

When Disney CEO Bob Iger was asked about the possible deal he didn’t comment on it, but he did talk about the importance of digital distribution and direct-to-consumer. This is not the first time Disney has talked about cord cutting. Recently Disney talked to their shareholders about how over-the-top streaming is the future of TV and how they plan to move heavily into it.

So it looks as though Disney will buy someone to get a larger streaming presence. The question now is who…
