The Telegraph first reported on the news, saying that Sky and Disney were “putting the final touches to a multi-year partnership” over the weekend. The partnership would make sense, as Sky already has licensing agreements with Disney.
The Disney+ app was already set to expand to the UK on March 24, with subscription costs set at with a £5.99 per month or £59.99 per year. The app would still be available on its own, according to reports. However, this partnership would mean that Disney+ content would also be integrated into Sky Q, allowing subscribers to bundle their Disney+ subscription with other services, like Comedy Central and MTV.
Sky recently recently extended their partnership with Netflix, affirming their commitment to combining streaming and linear content for customers. If the deal with Disney+ goes through, it’s likely that Disney+ will appear in the same apps section as Netflix, making it easy for viewers to find exactly what they’re looking for.
As a report from Light Reading points out, this potential deal with Sky shows that Disney may be open to pursuing further partnerships with pay TV services, including those in the US, in addition to bringing content directly to consumers through the Disney+ app.
