Back in October 2023, it was announced that James Wan’s Atomic Monster and screenwriter Gary Dauberman were developing a remake of the 1990’s animated series, Gargoyles for Disney+.
Dauberman, who will showrun the reboot, gave fans an update on the series while speaking with Variety:
Gary, you’re working on the “Gargoyles” reboot. It’s a Disney property, but you tend to work on very dark projects. Do you feel like this is going to be more sinister than people expect?
Dauberman: Oh, yes, another beloved piece of IP. This new iteration of “Gargoyles”… The show was already pretty dark in that it was serialized, it was a mature thing, it’s operatic and the story was so epic. I’m hoping it’s very similar to the vibe that you got when you were watching it back in the late ’90s. I just loved that half hour of television, falling into their world. I’m hoping we achieve that. It’s a lot of fun, though — it’s a thrill.
The animated series originally ran from October 24, 1994 to February 15, 1997, with a total of 78 episodes across three seasons. The voice cast of Gargoyles featured Keith David as Goliath, Salli Richardson as Elisa Maza, Jonathan Frakes as David Xanatos, Marina Sirtis as Demona, Ed Asner as Hudson and Jeff Bennett, Bill Fagerbakke, Thom Adcox-Hernandez as Brooklyn, Broadway, and Lexington.
What was originally marketed as a typical kids’ cartoon, Gargoyles turned out to be much darker and more sophisticated than other animated shows at the time, dealing with themes like betrayal, redemption, and mortality. One of the most praised elements of the show was David’s deep, commanding voice as Goliath. The actor’s performance gave Goliath a Shakespearean gravitas that made the character unforgettable.
Though it wasn’t a massive ratings hit during its original run, Gargoyles built a passionate cult following that remains strong even today with a lot of interest in the live action revival. All three seasons are available to stream today on Disney+ at the link below.
