When we reported on the movies leaving Disney+ yesterday, we noted that the change was likely due to licensing deals that were in place before the launch of the streaming service. Now, a Disney spokesperson has confirmed to Gizmodo that the titles leaving Disney+ were related to legacy deals.
The spokesperson followed that confirmation by saying that all titles that left the site will return to the Disney+ library when existing licenses elsewhere expire.
While this was an unwelcome surprise for many Disney+ subscribers who remembered a previous statement from Disney saying “There will not be a ‘rotating slate’ of licensed movies each month,” we did get some indication that this would be a possibility. In October, Gizmodo reported that a Disney+ spokeperson said a “very, very small” amount of content would be removed if there was a conflict with existing licensing deals.
While seeing titles leave the platform is disappointing, they will return eventually.
