Disney Exec Exits to Become CEO of TikTok

Disney’s Kevin Mayer is resigning from his role as Chariman of Direct-to-Consumer and International, to become the CEO of TikTok, the app for making and sharing videos.

Mayer’s role at Disney put him in charge of streaming, overseeing Disney+ and ESPN+, along with taking a leadership role in Disney taking control of Hulu last year.

“Kevin has had an extraordinary impact on our company over the years, most recently as head of our direct-to-consumer business,” Chapek said in a statement. “He has done a masterful job of overseeing and growing our portfolio of streaming services, while bringing together the creative and technological assets required to launch the hugely successful Disney Plus globally.”

Mayer moves into the new role at TikTok amid concerns about security and privacy in the app, which has grown quickly, especially among kids and teens. TikTok has recently dealt with allegations of violating children’s privacy laws. Despite those concerns, TikTok has reportedly reached 2 billion downloads as of April.

In a statement from TikTok, Mayer said, “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to join the amazing team at ByteDance. Like everyone else, I’ve been impressed watching the company build something incredibly rare in TikTok — a creative, positive online global community — and I’m excited to help lead the next phase of ByteDance’s journey as the company continues to expand its breadth of products across every region of the world.”

Disneyland President Rebecca Campbell will succeed Mayer in the role of Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer. Campbell will now oversee Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu, and Hotstar.
