Disney+ Earned Over $60 Million in Sales from ‘Black Widow’ Opening Weekend on Premier Access

Disney and Marvel’s “Black Widow” brought in $215 million on opening weekend, with $60 million coming from Disney+ with Premier Access.

In “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

“Once again, Marvel has delivered an exceptional film to the delight of fans worldwide with Black Widow achieving numerous milestones in the current marketplace,” said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution. “Black Widow’s strong performance this weekend affirms our flexible distribution strategy of making franchise films available in theaters for a true cinematic experience and, as COVID concerns continue globally, providing choice to consumers who prefer to watch at home on Disney+.”

Along with the launch on Disney+ with Premier Access, “Black Widow” premiered in theaters over the weekend. The film brought in $80 million at the box office domestically and $78 million internationally, making it the largest domestic box office opening since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Disney doesn’t often share specifics about viewer data and profits from individual streaming titles, so this is an interesting look at how a simultaneous launch in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access has worked out for the company. The next film to make a theater and Premier Access debut will be “Jungle Cruise” with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt on July 30.
