Disney Announces a New Direct-to-Consumer Unit

Yesterday The Walt Disney Co. announced a major reorganization. Part of this effort was to launch a new direct-to-consumer unit to focus on new products such as their ESPN Plus subscription service and the planned subscription streaming service from Disney that is launching in 2019.

The new unit will be headed by Kevin Mayer, who has been Disney’s chief strategy officer since 2015.

“We are strategically positioning our businesses for the future, creating a more effective, global framework to serve consumers worldwide, increase growth, and maximize shareholder value,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger. “With our unparalleled Studio and Media Networks serving as content engines for the company, we are combining the management of our direct-to-consumer distribution platforms, technology and international operations to deliver the entertainment and sports content consumers around the world want most, with more choice, personalization and convenience than ever before.”

This all comes as Disney has recently been setting its sights on streaming as the future of TV. Disney has two major new streaming services launching over the next year or so. First, the ESPN Plus service that will include a collection of original programming and sports not aired on ESPN and ESPN2.

Disney is also launching a new family-friendly subscription streaming service full of Disney content. It looks like with this reorganization that this is just the start of Disney’s plans for streaming.
