Disney & Amazon Are Fighting

Want to buy a Disney movie? Amazon may not be the place to go.

It was first reported by WDW News Today that Amazon has not been listing new Disney movies. If you want to purchase Blu-rays for movies such as Moana or Rogue One from Amazon you are out of luck. The official Amazon listings will give you an error message that they are out of stock or just unavailable for sale. (You will find third parties selling them on Amazon for crazy markups.)

Finding stuff out of stock on Amazon is not unusual, but it has now been a month since they have been in stock. If you go to other sites, such as Best Buy or Target, you will find them for sale; however, there is one way to get these movies and that is through Amazon Video for streaming or download.

Both Amazon and Disney have declined to comment on what is happening. For now this seems to be only affecting new Disney movies. Older Disney movies can still be found in stock on Amazon.

What’s Happening?

That is hard to say. It is possible that Disney and Amazon are fighting over some contract. When you buy in bulk like Amazon would you typically get special pricing. It is possible that Amazon is pushing to get a better deal on the movies.

It is also possible that Amazon has tied the sale of Disney DVDs and Blu-rays to some type of deal with Amazon Prime Video. Similarly to how services such as Dish use contact negotiations for its satellite service to push rights to its streaming service Sling TV.

For now we will have to wait. The good news is you still have options to get Disney movies on disc. Sadly that option is not Amazon at this time.
