DISH Wins a $25 Million Judgment Against A Pirate TV Service

A long-running legal battle against Jadoo TV, a popular provider of pirated South Asian content, has reached its conclusion with a resounding victory for copyright holders. The International Broadcaster Coalition Against Piracy (IBCAP) today announced that a U.S. court has ordered Jadoo TV and its CEO, Sajid Sohail, to pay almost $25 million in damages and permanently cease all operations worldwide by December 22nd, 2024.

The lawsuit, initially filed in 2018 by IBCAP member DISH Network, alleged that Jadoo TV engaged in widespread copyright infringement by distributing pirated South Asian television channels and content through its set-top boxes and mobile application. The court found Jadoo TV and Sohail liable for direct, contributory, and vicarious copyright infringement, holding Sohail personally responsible as the “guiding spirit” behind the illegal operation.

Landmark Judgment and Settlement

This final judgment is significant for several reasons:

“This final judgment and settlement marks the culmination of a six-year legal battle,” said Chris Kuelling, executive director of IBCAP. “Today’s announcement sends a strong message that the end of the road for a pirate IPTV service is a significant monetary payment and loss of your entire business.”

Impact on Piracy

This case serves as a powerful deterrent to other illegal streaming services. It demonstrates the legal and financial consequences of copyright infringement and highlights the commitment of organizations like IBCAP to protecting intellectual property rights.

The shutdown of Jadoo TV, once a major player in the pirate IPTV market, is a significant victory in the fight against online piracy. It sends a clear message that copyright infringement will not be tolerated and that those who engage in such activities will be held accountable.
