Dish Plans to Spend $10 Billion to Build a 5G Home Internet Network

Mid age woman sitting at table5G internet brings the promise of competition to home internet. Instead of having to run a wire to each house in a town, companies can build a few towers and deliver 5G internet in a fraction of the time.

Now Dish wants in on the effort joining Charter, Google, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and others. Not only is Dish all in on 5G, they plan to spend big to make it happen.

“We’re now going to spend at least $10 billion or more on a 5G network. We don’t have that kind of capital on our balance sheet today,” said Dish Network’s Charlie Ergen at the Connect X trade show.

Dish won spectrum for 5G in the recent FCC auction. Dish has also announced that they have deals to license spectrum from other companies to help them build out their 5G network.

This is great news for cord cutters not only because it brings one more option for home internet but also because of who it is. Seeing companies like Dish and Google push for 5G puts pressure on Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T from just trying to make 5G look like 4G.

Later this year, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon all plan to launch 5G in select markets. The goal is to speed up 5G rollout in 2019 with reports of having the network covering 50% of the United States in 2020.
