Now it seems that Dish Network the parent company behind Sling TV is making the first big move here in the United States. It was recently announced that Dish Network had filed a lawsuit against TV Addons and the third-party add-on ZemTV for content infringement.
The ZemTV service is retransmitting these channels over the Internet to end-users that download the ZemTV add-on for the Kodi media player, which is available for download at the websites www.tvaddons.ag and www.tvaddons.org, Dishs lawyers said in their complaint.
Website Operators have actual or constructive knowledge of this infringing activity and materially contribute to that activity by providing the forum where the ZemTV add-on can be downloaded and soliciting and accepting donations from ZemTV users, Dish writes.
This lawsuit is the first of its kind in the United States. Other countries, such as Britain and Canada, have already had several.
Many will be watching this case closely because it could serve as a template for future lawsuits. Though as with all legal actions they are typically slow meaning we may not know anything this year.
