DISH Just Won $2 Million in Damages From a Set TV IPTV Reseller

Male hand holding TV remote control.Back in June of 2018 Dish won a lawsuit against SET TV an IPTV service that reportedly streamed content owned by DISH without permission. As part of the lawsuit ending SET TV was ordered to pay DISH $90 million. Now DISH just won $2 million more in damages from a SET TV reseller called A-Box TV a website that sold SET TV and was reportedly run by Julie Bishop.

In the complaint, against A-Box DISH said: “Defendants sell subscriptions and devices for a pirate streaming television service called ‘SET TV’, which includes numerous television channels that were received without authorization from DISH’s satellite service and subsequently retransmitted without authorization on the SET TV pirate streaming service.”

As best we can tell this is the first time in the United States that a reseller of an IPTV service has agreed to pay damages. There are still many IPTV resellers both big and small selling subscriptions to a long list of IPTV services. Now it seems that companies like DISH are not just targeting the services but also the resellers who promote them.

Now that DISH was successful against the A-Box TV team it has set a precedent for other possible causes targeting resellers of illegal streaming services. Often these services live outside of the United States but use US Residences to reseller their services. The question now is what will Dish and other pay-TV services do next after winning their victory over SET TV.
