Discovery’s New Streaming Service Will Launch “Very Soon”

At a Goldman Sachs conference this week, Discovery CEO David Zaslav said that the company is worked on new, original content for its upcoming streaming service, noting that the service will be launching “very soon.”

“So we’ve been very quietly over the last year working aggressively, getting all of our stuff together,” Zaslav said, according to a report from The Wrap. “We’re quite close.”

“The additional thing that’s happened is, people are getting very acclimated to this idea of subscribing. I think we’re at the very beginning of that cycle, and they’ve subscribed to a lot of stuff,” he continued. “For us, we’re going to be coming with a fresh library of content, a huge amount of fresh originals at a time when the road has been paved by Netflix and Disney and HBO, and people are getting more and more acclimated to viewing content on devices.”

The streaming service has been in the works since 2019, with Discovery sharing vague updates in earnings calls and interviews ever since.

While Zaslav hasn’t yet given details about pricing, there has been speculation that the service will be ad-supported, which could mean a free tier with limited content, similar to NBCUniversal’s Peacock. We’ll keep an eye out for more details and a launch date for this new streaming service.
