Discovery’s CEO Pushes for $8 No Sports Bundle

Male hand holding TV remote control.Over the last few months the talk of a sports-free option for cable and streaming services has picked up some big backers. Mainly A&E, AMC, Viacom, and Discovery.

The talk had been about a $20 bundle with no sports or news. Now it seems that is not low enough for David Zaslav, the CEO of Discovery Communications. Speaking at the Bernstein Investor Conference, he said that there needs to be an $8 to $10 tiny bundle with no sports and only a few networks.

“That’s what’s worked everywhere else in the world,” Zaslav said, adding that channel bundles without sports are accelerators for the pay-TV market everywhere in the world.

It seems that Zaslav’s main goal is to fight back against $10 Netflix contracts. What channels will you be able to get for $10? How many subscribers will be open to a sports and news free streaming service?

There are companies that seem to be opposed to this plan, mainly ones that own sports and news channels. So don’t expect to see Disney, Fox, or CBS joining in this $8 a month package.

For now we will have to wait and see what happens with this push for a sports-free, news-free service. We also have to wait to see if Sling TV, DIRECTV NOW, PlayStation Vue, or Hulu will be willing to offer this option.
