Discovery Plans to Launch Additional Streaming Services Based On Discovery Networks

Today Discovery’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Direct to Consumer Tyler Whitworth sat down with FierceVideo to talk about their new Food Network streaming service.

During the interview, FierceVideo asked Mr. Whitworth if Discovery was working on new streaming services for the future. Mr. Whitworth replied saying: “Yeah, the Eurosport Player runs off this platform. As we build other new offerings, we’ll do it off this platform. When Peter [Faricy] came over, he brought over Avi Saxena, who was a senior technology leader at Amazon, to lead this core platform function and they’ve been working diligently on Food Network Kitchen but also a number of things across Discovery.”

This comes as Discovery’s CEO said just yesterday that Discovery has no plans right now to bundle together access to multiple cable TV networks. But now, it seems although Discovery might not be releasing a streaming service with access to live content from networks like TLC and HGTV, but they might create one for original programming based on these networks.

From the sounds of it, Discovery wants to make a network of streaming services that will target the hardcore fans of their TV networks. The idea seems to be if you love the Food Network, you may be willing to pay to get even more Food Network content that is not aired on the TV network.

Sadly Discovery has not even hinted at what networks will be getting their own dedicated streaming services. With the new Food Network Kitchen streaming service only a few days old, we will likely have to wait to see what Discovery does next. The good news is if you love Discovery there may soon be new ways to enjoy your favorite shows.
