Discovery is Interested in A La Carte TV to Fight Cord Cutting

For some time now Discovery has talked about a direct-to-consumer streaming service. Now Discovery’s CEO says that they are looking into offering a direct to consumer option for some of their smaller networks.

During this weeks 4th quarter earnings call Discovery’s CEO was asked about smaller bundles being offered to subscribers. As Discovery’s CEO answered that question, he opened up about the possible future of an a la carte direct to consumer option. “But to your point, we also have a real vision for [what to do with smaller digital channels] in terms of going direct-to-consumer,” Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav said. “Net-net I think over time you’ll see fewer channels, but we think we have at least one or two more that we can build strong here in the U.S.”

We do not know which channels Discovery is looking to take a la carte, but it is unlikely to be their big brands at this time. With Discovery’s recent purchase of Scripps Networks, they have a huge number of smaller networks to pick from. This may not be what many readers want, but it is the first step on the path to a direct to consumer a la carte option many have been hoping for.
