“We are pleased with the positive decision of the European Commission,” said Discovery CEO David Zaslav. “We believe that joining the Discovery and Scripps Networks’ family of brands and assets will allow us to better serve our passionate fans with more content on more platforms worldwide, while at the same time optimizing our business for greater efficiency.”
Now Discovery is waiting for US approval to close their deal to buy Scripps Networks.
According to reports Discovery sees expanding their lineup with the purchase of Scripps Networks as a way to diversify as cord cutting grows. From sources close to the idea, it looks like Discovery wants to create a service that will let non-cable subscribers pay Discovery directly and get access to most, if not all, its channels. This is similar to how HBO and Showtime now offer their own streaming services HBO NOW and SHOWTIME.
